Bird's-Eye View

Remote roof measurement is changing the way some roofing companies sell. Some now commission a remote view of the property before agreeing to send out a salesperson. Others make a sales appointment, then prepare an estimate based on remote roof measurement or they send a salesperson to the house and then commission a report if the roof is sufficiently complicated.

Roofers find that remote roof measurement, like this diagram from EagleView Technologies, is especially helpful in estimating today's more complex roof structures, which typically feature dormers, hips, steep pitches, and curved surfaces. It allows for the roof to be broken down into measurable angles and planes that take the guesswork out of the estimate.

Remote roof measurement turns an address into a high-resolution photograph of the property, usually from satellite images. Software then breaks the photograph down into a diagram of connected planes and provides a square-foot figure for each.
