ACR Advanced Commercial Roofing had been used to wrapping up work for the season when cold weather settled in, but the addition of a new scaffolding and tenting system developed by the German company Layher is now making it possible to work straight through the winter months. ACR acquired the Illinois rights to sell the system, and immediately put it to work on its first project--a covering for a $1.1 million roof replacement on the Allerton Mansion near Champaign. ACR Operations Chief Rob Smith said the roof covering would keep out rain and snow and allow workers to work in December, January and February, normally no time to be up on a roof in that part of the country. Smith's firm has a staff of six whose job it is to put and take down the tents. The company has landed several jobs, and has interested other area contractors in renting scaffolding and tents as well. "This is just a massive version of those tents you tailgate in," he said. "We just make it large enough so you can build a building inside it in a climate-controlled environment on a schedule that isn't impaired by the weather."
