The next evolution of solar panels could be solar roofs, if Elon Musk has his way. According to Entrepreneur, during Solar City's Q2 earnings call, Musk expanded on one of the company's two future products, the solar roof. The target client isn't the same as those looking to add solar panels to their current roof, but instead those that are putting in a completely new roof:

"So there huge market that is sort of inaccessible to SolarCity because people know they are going to have to replace the roof and you don't want to put solar panels on a roof you know you are going to replace," Musk said. "However, if your roof is nearing end of life and you have to get a new roof anyway... so why not have a solar roof that is better in many other ways as well."

The new roof will reportedly be sent as a kit to homeowners for installation. Tesla recently entered a deal to purchase Solar City and merge the two companies together. Musk currently serves on the board of Solar City, and recently outlined his future plans in a web post title, Master Plan, Part Deux. The plan focuses heavily on solar power. From the plan:

"Create a smoothly integrated and beautiful solar-roof-with-battery product that just works, empowering the individual as their own utility, and then scale that throughout the world. One ordering experience, one installation, one service contact, one phone app."
