Homeowners dislike spending money on behind-the-wall updates they won't see, but well-built and strong walls are a must in every home. From super-strong drywall to a new sheathing-plus-moisture barrier combo, here are four new panel products for 2016.
Drywall with Biceps
CertainTeed’s drywall is hitting the gym. The maker calls Habito “the world’s strongest 1/2-inch wallboard,” thanks to a high-density formulation that can hold 30 pounds per screw with no need for drywall anchors or nailing into studs to carry the load. Strength and sound-insulating properties make Habito ideal for media rooms, décor walls, and high-traffic areas.hellohabito.com
Fire Me Up
FlameBlock Fire-Rated OSB from LP features a non-combustible, fiberglass-reinforced Pyrotite layer. The panels offer 15-minute thermal barrier protection and a 30-minute Class A flame spread rating. Plus, the brand recently launched FlameBlock protection on its Solid Start I-Joists. Used individually or together, the materials help builders meet fire safety codes and help protect residents. LP offers a variety of 1- and 2-hour wall assemblies to maximize the products’ features and cost savings. lpcorp.com
Got Your Back
Johns Manville used its polyisocyanurate commercial roofing panels as the basis for new GoBoard waterproof tilebacker. Lighter than cement board for residential and light commercial tile applications, installers can score and cut GoBoard with a utility knife, and the material only needs to be sealed at the joints and fasteners. Available in 1/4 and 1/2-inch thicknesses. jm.com
GP is entering the market of combined sheathing and moisture barrier products with the ForceField Air and Water Barrier System. The 7/16-inch-thick panels are laminated with a moisture barrier that replaces housewrap, helping builders save on materials and labor. Specially formulated seam tape seals the system to prevent air infiltration and leaks, and can be applied to the panels at temperatures as low as 0 degrees F without sacrificing adhesion. gpforcefield.com
