She is trying to raise $40,000 with a Kickstarter campaign so she can hire and train locals to make the thousands of tiles that will be needed to repair the church in North Braddock. Swoon's Heliotrope Foundation has already created two sister projects, in Haiti and New Orleans. Braddock is a former steel-mining town that's seen its share of economic troubles. Swoon was drawn there by the local government's invitation for "urban farmers" to revitalize vacant lots. She acquired the church, at the time slated for demolition, in 2009 and has been working on the restoration ever since. In addition to making all of the ceramic roofing tiles by hand, employees also will create and sell interior and decorative tiles.
