DuPont said a key benefit to the new line of underlayments is its "walkability." Jim Ash, the company's global roofing market segment leader, promised contractors would "see, feel and experience" the difference from other brands of underlayment. Because Protect is so grippy it can be installed in any kind of weather, and it will lay flat and wrinkle free, according to the manufacturer. The surface also is easy to chalk.
Protec may be used on roofs with a pitch of 2-in-12 or greater, under asphalt and wood shingles, tile, metal and slate. It comes in three grades, each with progressively better quality, durability, strength, warranty protection and UV resistance, DuPont said.
Protec comes in rolls 48 inches wide and 250 feet long, with warranties ranging from 30 to 50 years, depending on grade. It can tolerate UV exposure for as long as six months (three months for the 120 grade). The underlayment also meets industry code standards, and has a Class A fire rating.
