In the wake of severe flooding and fires in both Louisiana and California, the Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners of potential scammers. The bureau is warning residents to beware of “storm chasers” and out-of-town contractors who are offering their services. The warning says that many of these individuals lack the proper licensing, offer up quick fixes, perform shoddy work, and often make promises that they never intend on following through on.

The BBB offers these pieces of advice for victims of natural disasters. Pass these tips along to your clients:

  1. Find businesses you can trust at
  2. Get at least three estimates and get quotes in writing
  3. Get a written contract
  4. Resist high-pressure sales
  5. Be careful of door-to-door contractors
  6. Don’t pay for the job in advance
  7. Be careful of allowing someone you do not know to inspect your roof
