Roofing & Insulation Supply (RIS) was founded in 2000 by a group of roofing and insulation industry veterans and has annual sales of about $70 million. Its 20 branches include 14 that sell only insulation, three that distribute only roofing supplies, and three that distribute both roofing and insulation. It does business in the Southeast, New England and the Mid-Atlantic, the Upper Midwest, Texas and Colorado. RIS founder Sprague Mulliken said its relationship with Beacon would give it access to new customers in both the U.S. and Canada and was a good strategic and cultural fit. Beacon says the deal will strengthen its insulation business, a fast-growing part of the market that's being stimulated by energy-conservation changes. Beacon, traded on Nasdaq as BECN, is the largest publicly traded roofing distributor in the country with 360 branches in 45 states. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
