Studying industry benchmarks on profit margins, asset levels and equity positions let business owners compare how they're doing in relation to their peers. This NAHB survey asked single-family builders nationwide to provide income statements and balance sheets on a confidential basis. Builders reported an average of $16.2 million in sales, 81 percent of which went for land costs, and direct and indirect construction costs. Profitability levels in 2014 were the highest reported since 2006. Numbers were off dramatically in 2008 and have been rising slowly but steadily ever since.
