John Hurley is a roofer by profession, and those experience have become the basis for a humorous work of fiction, The Roofers. Hurley wrote the self-published book in longhand, and it's now on sale in a number of book stores in both the U.S. and Canada. It's also available online.

The book tells the story of a roofing crew, the Brew Crew, that heads to the southern U.S. to help in rebuilding efforts after a hurricane. The roofers run into problems with Mexican roofers who fear they will lose business to the newcomers.

“There are lots of twists and turns in the book and a lot of colorful characters who work with the roofers,” Hurley said.

Hurley has a sequel, Roofers 2, ready for publication. But first, he'd like to see his first book adapted for the big screen. He said the book has been with actor/producer Mark Wahlberg since 2014. “It’s still sitting on his desk in Hollywood, and the last I heard it’s number 32 in line for him to read,” Hurley said.
