Some Texas homeowners have been victimized twice this year--first by a series of hail storms that swept through the area, and then again by thieves who have taken the shingles contractors intended to use for repairs.
Pallets of shingles valued at up to $2,000 have been a tempting target for thieves in Plano. David Tilley of the Plano Police Department said authorities have had 74 reports of shingle thefts since the first of the year.
"Unfortunately, in an area as large as what we have there's pretty much a market for anything out there," Tilley said. Police say they've caught some thieves by being in the right place at the right time, but Plano alone is 72 square miles, and thefts are occurring all over the city, Tilley said
In Collin County, police now ask homeowners to work with contractors and schedule delivery of the shingles only on the day the work is to take place, not before.
